I tried here to summarize large class of solutions we usually use, add demographic decrease, and southern wasteland. The concern are items that are relayed by medias, especially TV.

Economy is the most accurate way we organize in order to produce a great bunch of goods and services. Maximization of profit tend to lower cost that in many case result in lower resources consumption.
For example, if the phones are now build in china it is just because the production cost there plus shipping is lower than any where else. The cost optimization also covers transient states, as production may be relocated or abandoned or any changes due to market moves.
It is important to keep in mind that it is a very powerful and efficient process. No other way have ever shown better efficiency so far. I am afraid we to coop with for a long time until we find a replacement.
The major way liberal economy can be oriented into different choices, is costs. If it is not desirable something be done, just make it more expensive. A other way will soon be find.
The draw back is when cost is affordable, the only parameter to make
more money is the quantity. The economical growth is then linked with
the market
size and most of the time the good bet is to produce more for more
people and nonexistent needs.

Companies are asked to make money. and not to bother with social, ecology, or man faith. Any of us when acting in this context have his choices bounded to his company interests.
The concern of economical actors is just not to solve anything. Its to make money.
The more a resources go short, the more its value increase. This does not stop extinction by over exploitation it encourage it.

Ecology, at its beginnings it wasn't really a concern for the majority. Nothing to worry about with whales, cod, moa, lions, tigers. Coal, what a god damned brilliant stuff. Heating for all in Europa, that was much freezing than nowadays, yep. Then diesel, soon after, nuclear power. ecology at those times wasn't just audible.
However, most of the times, ecology have been able to predict what was going to follow man actions, like whaling, fishing, intensive farming, industrial exhausts or whatever. As a science ecology is a major interest.
Promoting alternatives solutions is an other field that is also called ecology. This time, ecology act as a technology provider. Part of them actually show real improvement while being compatible with our way of life. Obviously we should use the smother possible solutions and it may be possible to ask people to make efforts to save resources or keep clean the places there where.
But for now, these alternatives are not able to produce enough energy and food for industrial and post-industrial places. Even if key improvement are found, for example to solve energy storage and transportation issues, the overall production will stay below the needs as there are about to increase. For them to succeed in wining this race it is necessary to come down with population and/or standard of living.
